7 Quick Takes Friday (Vol. 1)

I’ve been reading “7 Quick Takes” on various other blogs and I’ve decided to join in the fun!

I signed the girls up for summer reading this past monday. The program runs from June 1 to July 31 so we are a little behind the eight-ball getting signed up but we are almost halfway to our reading goal. For pre-readers, you just have to record the books (goal of 40) that you read to your children; for readers, I believe they have a goal of reading nine hours. It’s easy-peasy and when the kids reach their goal, they get the prize of a free book! How cool is that?

On a selfish note, I kind of lost my external motivation for going to the gym. One of my closest friends is also an instructor at the gym I attend. However, due to certain events, she’s decided to find employment elsewhere. It really makes me sad because one of the reasons I like to go to the gym is not just to workout but also to socialize and it seems like, due to various circumstances, all of my gym buddies are disappearing! Now I have to dig deep and go to the gym just to workout.

The Mister headed to Northern Wisconsin this week to play in a Member-Guest Golf Tournament with his dad. While I am sure that I could have seriously rocked spending five days and nights solo with my littles, I decided to invite my mom down for an impromptu visit. She arrived here Wednesday morning and is heading back Saturday morning, and it’s been really nice having Grandma here with us.

Whoever named them the “terrible twos” was lying. I would so take the twos again over the 3.5s-4s. The Bear turns 4 in July and these past few weeks have been very challenging with her. Ugh.

The hummingbird wars have begun in my backyard. The bonus is that we now have a Ruby-throated Hummingbird in the fray. For some reason, watching the little birds just crack me up. If I happen to be washing the feeder, they will hover outside the windows, staring, until the feeder is replaced. It’s amazing how aggressive they can be as well. Well, aggressive and not afraid of humans… especially when they dive-bomb.

The house next door to ours is in foreclosure and we have no clue what bank owns it. This presents a little problem: There is no one taking care of the maintenance of the house! No one is cutting the lawn and as a result we have moles that have infiltrated our yard and are building little mole cities (in fact, the city came out two weeks ago to mow the front yard. The police chief lives kitty-corner from us and I am sure that’s why it was finally cut.) A huge storm blew through here on Tuesday morning and ripped off about one-third of the siding on one of the walls of the house. The pieces that are not hanging off of the house ended up in our yard and in our pool. The house is unlocked and anyone can get in there, and there’s mold EVERYWHERE. The Mister and I are thinking that it might be time to draft a letter to the city. Thoughts?

Many women fear that once they have kids they will no longer be perceived as attractive. But author Sarah Maizes’ new book can help any mom get her groove and confidence back on track. Read an excerpt from “Got MILF? The Modern Mom’s Guide to Feeling Fabulous, Looking Great and Rocking A Minivan.”

Just came across this book blurb tonight and my gut reaction is a negative one. But I hate to judge without actually reading the book so… stay tuned!

Kari, your words & friendship mean more to me than you know. I WILL not let the fact that we won’t be at the same gym affect that. We will just have to be more creative & find different places to socialize. Love ya!!!

    1. The Summer Reading Program at the library ROCKS!! My girls have been doing it for years–even won Cards tickets a couple of times!
    2. JUST DO IT!!! Even if you go to the gym and only do an “easy” workout, YOU WORKED OUT!
    3. Enjoy the time you have w/your momma.
    4. I’ve loved every age of my kids, although the early teen years have been tough.
    5. Thank you for feeding the birds!!!
    6. A home on my court recently went into forclosure. I got a lot of the neighbors together one Sat morning to spruce up the place! It was a lot of work, but we actually had a good time working together. Now, we will all just take turns cutting the grass. I’ve seen many of these homes turn into eye-sores and I didn’t want to look at an overgrown mess everyday.
    7. ……..4 kids and so far, so good b/t this married couple!! 😉

  3. i totally agree with you about the terrible two’s not being so terrible. four was terrible for us … and then there is 16. sigh.

I love the humming bird wars. I’m lucky enough to have them 12 months a year. Regarding Got MILF?, being a man who used to think “MILF” (knowing what it means), I know it’s flattering to still look great after kids, and all. But men other than your hubby are just not supposed to be that interested…That’s not to say I don’t see beauty when someone passes by, but…
